All About: Wet Tail

All About: Wet Tail

-What is it?
-How do you treat it?

First
Lets make something clear...
Dwarf hamsters do not get wet tail but they can suffer from diarrhea.

What is it?
It is a stress-related bacterial disease which is very contagious.
Wet tail is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the gut.

Causes
Many things can contribute to the onset of wet tail:

  • stress
  • unsanitary conditions
  • exposure to another sick hamster

These things don't cause wet tail, but can lower the immune system and make a hamster more likely to contract wet tail!

How to treat:
The first step if you notice (in combination)

  • a seemingly wet tail
  • foul odor
  • watery stools
  • loss of appetite
  • aggression
  • other changes
