This is!

What is it?
Nesting Fluff Alternative (Poplar Wood Fluff)
Made from soft, natural poplar wood fibers, this fluff alternative supports natural nesting and burrowing instincts, and gives hamsters a texture they can bring safely into their nests.
Fluff and Fabric...
...DOES NOT BREAK DOWN OR DIGEST SAFELY, LOOSE THREADS POSE SEVERE PHYSICAL HAZARDS SUCH AS IMPACTIONS AND CAN LEAD TO DEATH.
Common unsafe fibers
- Kapok fiber (often marketed as safe for hamsters!!!): too similar to fabric fibers, is not digestible and can cause blockages.
- Fluff found in pet stores: better to be safe than sorry and avoid most retail options, make sure you do your research!
Consequences of your hamster ingesting fabric
- Blockages: hamsters cannot digest fabric, it can build up in their intestines and cause gastrointestinal issues or choking.
- Circulation: loose threads can wrap around your hamster’s toes and limbs and cut off circulation causing loss of limbs
- Dental issues: giving your hamster inappropriate things for them to chew can cause various dental issues such as misalignment
These things can lead to death which is why fabric is a non-negotiable.
Make sure
You don’t drape blankets, curtains, or other fabrics over your hamster’s enclosure or close enough that your hamster can access.
Don’t allow fabric pieces around your hamster when in free roam time and make sure that they’re supervised.
Only use safe nesting materials such as poplar wood fluff in your hamster’s enclosure.
Most importantly, make sure you do your research about anything that goes in your hamster’s enclosure!
