Did you know that some flowers can be toxic for your hamster?
Feeding your hamster something toxic can cause reactions such as:
- seizures
- weakness
- lethargy
- diarrhea
- death
What common flowers are TOXIC?
Lilies
Every part of a Lily and all kinds of lilies are toxic to hamsters. Ingesting one can cause drooling, lethargy, kidney failure, and ultimately death.
Carnations
Contain an unknown irritant that can cause stomach problems and skin problems.
Peonies
Contain a substance called “paeonol” which can cause all mentioned symptoms. All parts of the plant are toxic.
Peach Blossoms
Twigs and leaves contain “cyanogenic glucoside” which is toxic to hamsters
***This applies to all stone fruits
Hydrangeas
Contains cyanide, which can cause weakness, lethargy, and death.
Foxgloves
Toxic to most animals, can cause severe symptoms and lead to death.
What should you do if your hamster ingests something toxic?
Remember: hamsters can't vomit, so they can't get rid of the toxic thing they ingest on their own.
Contact your vet ASAP if your hamster ingests something toxic.
