The Lab Block Debate

The Lab Block Debate

Are lab blocks good for hamsters?
If yes... what are they?!

Hamsters are notorious for picking out their favorite foods!

When fed only a seed mix, they may eat the tastiest ingredients first and leave behind foods containing important nutrients.

Lab blocks help provide consistent nutrition instead of relying on your hamster to balance their own diet.

We are not the same

Lab blocks ≠ typical pellets. Complete lab blocks are formulated to provide a consistent balance of essential nutrients in each piece, making them a useful nutritional foundation alongside a varied diet.

*in some countries, lab blocks are referred to as pellets

Complete lab blocks: Formulated to provide a consistent balance of essential nutrients in each piece, including protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Again, the goal isn't to eliminate variety — it's to have a reliable nutritional foundation while still offering variety and enrichment.

Okay... but what ARE Lab Blocks?

Lab blocks are primarily comprised of compressed cereal grains, plant proteins, and added vitamins and minerals

Nutrition content varies by brand, but generally lab blocks are heavily focused on protein (usually 15% to 24% depending on brand)

IMPORTANT

Lab blocks should not replace a balanced seed mix.

Lab blocks became popular when it became obvious that there were not balanced food mixes in the commercial market for hamsters.

Fresh vegetables, appropriate seeds/grains, and occasional animal-protein foods provide variety and enrichment. Veterinary sources generally recommend keeping lab blocks limited rather than allowing them to displace the complete diet.

Variety is important for enrichment

An ideal feeding schedule combines a mix of...

  • Lab blocks
  • Seed mix
  • Veggies/fruits
  • Healthy fat treat
  • Starchy veg treat

% vary by hamster species

Each hamster has different dietary concerns based on age, health, species, and more, the most important thing is making sure that you are doing your research to meet your hamster’s dietary needs.

Small ethical hamster brands are the leader in bringing nutritionally balanced food mixes to the hamster community that have enough protein in them to support a balanced diet.

Hamfetti
For example, has a balanced protein content and does not require a lab block to supplement, but if you have a hamster who selectively eats, a lab block should be added to boost protein intake.

Lab blocks allow for people to control the different protein content their hamster is receiving.

Other High Quality Seed Mixes

There are many small businesses, stepping up to create high variety seed mixes within the past 10 years which is really exciting! It would be exciting to see commercial seed mixes in the market that are safe for hammies!

These both have a balanced nutrition content!

Extra cases to utilize lab blocks

  • Rescues often have many different types of hamsters (pregnant, species, ages, etc.) and lab blocks help support different nutrient requirements
  • For an elderly hamster or hamster with dental issues -- lab blocks can be soaked in water to make it easier to consume
  • Picky eaters who don’t like the protein item/s in a seed mix and need a supplemental form of protein
